Philosophers have struggled with determining the proper role of government. In the absence of government and laws, people could do whatever they wanted, and some of them would try to slaughter others and steal their property. This is the state called anarchy. People have realized that the safety of the people and the country would be in jeopardy in such a state. Thus, it is necessary for a country to have a government and/or ruler. However, a ruler must not have absolute power nor lack authority. But the protection of the people and the country alone is not enough for a country to prosper. The property and the natural rights of the people and the government must also be protected. If the weak ruler is overthrown by rebels, the country would return to the brutish state of Anarchy. Thus, a ruler i s only legitimate to rule if he has the willingness and the ability to protect the people, their property, and their rights. Having willingness means when the ruler has power, he is willing to use that power to serve his people instead of his own interests. Having ability means that the ruler has enough authorities to be able to protect the people, their rights, etc. If a ruler has the willingness and ability, he will gain the people’s loyalty and support. In the â€Å"Mandate of Heaven,† a ruler got legitimacy only if he could untie the people and overthrow the previous ruler. â€Å"Heaven decides as the people decide.† Heaven approves of a ruler only if the people support him. Group Interviews Definition, Types and Tips

A group interview, sometimes known as a panel interview, can feel even more intimidating than a traditional job interview because there are more people in the room to impress. The key to success is knowing  what you can expect from a group interview. This will help to ease your nerves and also help you understand why companies use these interviews and what is expected of you. Group interviews are sometimes used by admissions committees when interviewing an education program candidate. Some companies also use group interviews to screen job candidates, which will be looked at closer here. Types of Group Interviews There are two basic types of group interviews: Candidate Group Interviews:  In a candidate  group interview, you will most likely be put in a room with other job applicants. In many cases, these applicants will be applying for the same position as you. During a candidate group interview, you will be asked to listen to information about the company and the position, and you may be asked to answer questions or participate in group exercises. This type of group interview is not very common.Panel Group Interviews:  In a  panel group interview, which is much more common, you will most likely be interviewed individually by a panel of two or more people. This type of group interview is almost always a question-and-answer session, but you might also be asked to participate in some type of exercise or test that simulates your potential work environment. Why Companies Use Them An increasing number of companies are using group interviews to screen job applicants. This change could be attributed to the desire to reduce turnover and the fact that teamwork is becoming more critical in the workplace. But the easiest explanation is that two heads are almost always better than one. When more than one person is conducting the interview it reduces the chances of making a bad hiring decision In a group interview, each interviewer will likely look at things differently and bring different questions to the table. For example, a human resources specialist may know a lot about hiring, firing, training, and benefits, but a department supervisor will probably have a better understanding of the day-to-day activities you will be asked to perform if you get the job. If both of these people are on a panel, they will ask you different types of questions.   What Youll Be Assessed On Group interviewers look for the same things other interviewers look for. They want to see a strong candidate who knows how to work well with others and behave properly and competently in a work environment. Specific things group interviewers scrutinize: Your Appearance. Attire, hygiene, and anything else that relates to your physical form will be judged. If you wear too much make-up or cologne, at least one of the interviewers will notice. If you forgot to put on deodorant or match your socks, at least one of the interviewers will notice. Dress well for the interview.Your Presentation Skills. Interviewers will be paying special attention to how you present yourself. Do you slouch or fidget? Do you make eye contact when you converse? Did you remember to shake hands with everyone in the room? Be aware of your body language and what it says about you during an interview.  Your communication skills. No matter what type of job you are applying for, you will need to be able to communicate. Specific skills that group interviewers look for is your ability to listen, follow instructions and get your ideas across.Your interest level. If you make any mistakes, at least one of your interviewers is bound to notice. Here are a few tips to help you make the best impression: Greet all of your interviewers individually. Make eye contact, say hello, and, if possible, shake hands.Dont focus on any one individual. The Western incursion, not only refined China militarily but brought in its course new ideas- nationalism, science and technology, and innovations in politics, philosophy, and art. Chinese leaders have sought to preserve the nations cultural uniqueness by promoting specifically Chinese blends of tradition and modernity. China has undergone several major political transformations from a feudal-like system in early historical times, to a centralized bureaucratic empire that lasted through many unpredictable changes till 1911, to a republic with a communist form of government in the mainland since 1949. Economic geography and population pressure help account for the traditionally controlling role of the state in China. The constant indispensability for state interference, whether for great public works programs or simply to keep such a large society together, brought up an authoritarian political system. The family prevailed as the fundamental social, economic, and religious unit. Interdependence was very prominent in family relations while generation, age, sex and immediacy of kinship strictly governed relations within the family. Family rather than nation usually created the greatest allegiances with the result that nationalism as known to the West came late to the Chinese. In principle, the elite in the authoritarian political system achieved their positions through merit rather than birth or wealth. There was an examination system that provided a vehicle for recruiting talented citizens to serve the emperor, which was a valuable and unusual institution in a society characterized by personal connections. Democracy, individualism, and private property were kept carefully in check. Central state authority, however, rarely penetrated to the local level. Chinese leaders invented bureaucracy to keep the country unified and mastered the art of keeping government small. The Chinese search for a modern state began in the nineteenth century when two major sources of disorder overwhelmed the imperial institutions: domestic disintegration and foreign invasion. Between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Chinese population had doubled and redoubled. The problem of the population explosion created tremendous pressure on the limited farmland to provide sufficient food supply. For economic, religious, of ethnic reasons, peasant uprisings began to erupt. Moreover, beginning with the Opium War of 1832-1842, the imperial army suffered a series of defeats at the hands of the industrial powers of the West. The image of a shattering imperial dynasty directed rebellion and dissolution within China, exemplified by the Taiping Rebellion of 1851-1864 that nearly toppled the Qing dynasty. (Zheng, Party vs. State in Post-1949 China, 30) The reform measures in the first decade of this century were aimed at replacing dynastic rule with a new form of government. Amon g the most significant changes was the abolition of the civil service exam in 1905, which virtually cut off the connections among the emperor, the ruling ideology, and the official gentry. This time the imperial rulers hoped to save themselves by experimenting with some new institutional adaptations. A revolution was menacing; students who had returned from abroad came with ideas harmful to the imperial rule. Following the overthrow of the imperial regime in the Revolution of 1922, central authority dissipated and the country was divided among regional warlords. Reunification, begun by the Nationalist government under the Kuomintang (KMT); was interrupted by the Japanese invasion in the 1930s. The unparalleled institutional crisis hastened the Chinese search for alternative means of reorganizing China. Since the last dynasty, Qing, collapsed construction of a modern Chinese state had been the goal shared by many Chinese modernizers.
