Answer: Part B Barriers to effective customer communication There are several barriers in the communication process that are likely to occur at any stage of the communication process (Griffin, 2013). There were significant communication barriers that were faced by Chuyen and her friends during their visit to Shanghai. The ten most important barriers are described below- Cultural differences- The expression of emotions, words and social interaction is different in different countries. There are instances when the people of one country do not freely connect with persons of different cultures (Griffin, 2013). This was exactly the scenario with Chuyen and her friends, who belonged to different countries such as Thailand, Malaysia and India. An interpreter should be used in order to overcome this barrier. Emotional differences- The main protagonists of the case study had a mental block that the tour guide was focusing more on the native people. Chuyen presumed that the tour guide was more concerned with the native people. This emotional barrier caused a barrier in the communication process. Physical barriers- The inability to interpret nonverbal signals can make the communication process less effective. The mineral spring water is known to have healing properties and hence it attracts a lot of foreign tourists. The City Council should focus on proper communication among the tourists coming from different cultures. It should develop mutual acceptance as well as understanding with the tourists. It is advisable to listen, observe, respect and create passion when dealing with people from different geographical locations. The City Council should adopt a flexible attitude as it is important when interacting with the tourists coming from all over the world.
